Muscle and Joint Pain

Muscle pain can commonly be felt in the upper back, lower back, neck and shoulders. Joint pain can affect one joint or more, and can be caused by arthritis, injury, overuse, bursitis (an inflammation or irritation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that acts like a grease to reduce friction) and other conditions. The knees, hips, spine and hands can also be affected by osteoarthritis.

COMMON CAUSES OF FOOT PAIN

The foot is made up of 26 bones and contains more than 30 joints. Multiply that by two and you have nearly 120 finely tuned parts that are almost constantly in motion.69,70 When our feet are not simply getting us from A to B, they are helping us to play sport or drive a car. This means our feet put in some serious leg work on a daily basis.

When you look at the foot more closely, you will see that it is divided into three distinct sections called the rearfoot, midfoot and forefoot. Many of the muscles that move the foot are in the lower leg and these muscles are attached by tendons to the various bones.

Foot pain may be caused by different things, but it most commonly happens when people are participating in sports or work in jobs that require a certain amount of physical activity.69,70

Another common cause of foot pain is wearing shoes that are too tight. Wearing high heels can also occasionally lead to heel pain. These habits can cause targeted pain around the balls of the feet and the bones. In addition, it is important not to tie shoelaces too tightly as this may cause pain and bruising on the top of the foot.69,70

A sprain of the foot or ankle occurs when ligaments that hold the bones together are overstretched and their fibres tear or stretch too far, causing pain in the ankle. The looseness of ligaments in these joints may also lead to foot pain.
